If Your Shirt Rises With Your Arms, Check the Armhole
A two-minute fitting-room test separates a narrow sleeve from an armhole cut too low. One may be worth altering; the other usually means trying a different cut.

The useful fitting-room test takes about two minutes and needs no measuring tape. Button the shirt, let it settle, then raise one arm out to the side while watching both the sleeve and the hem. Where the strain appears, and what moves with your arm, tells you more than the size on the label.
The working example here is a blue cotton-poplin button-front in a regular cut. Poplin is a tightly woven fabric with a smooth surface and little natural stretch, so it exposes fit problems instead of absorbing them. The advice is unisex: women’s, men’s, and unisex shirting may use different proportions, but the movement mechanics are the same.
Two restrictions that feel similar
A tight upper sleeve and a low armhole can both make a shirt feel restrictive when you reach for a shelf. They come from different parts of the pattern.
The armhole is the opening in the shirt body where the sleeve attaches. When its lower edge sits close to your natural underarm without cutting into it, your arm can move while much of the shirt body stays in place. A higher armhole is not automatically a tighter one; it can feel more mobile when the opening and sleeve have enough room.
A low armhole drops farther down the side of the torso. Raising your arm then pulls that low attachment point upward, taking the side seam and hem with it. The shirt may feel roomy while you stand still, yet behave like a restrictive garment as soon as you move.
A narrow sleeve creates a more local problem. The fabric grips the upper arm, often before the arm reaches shoulder height, and drag lines, meaning wrinkles that point toward an area of tension, appear across or around the biceps. The blue poplin shirt makes the distinction easy to see: a low armhole lifts its body, while a narrow sleeve strains mainly around the arm.
Set up the shirt before moving
Test the shirt over the kind of layer you expect to wear beneath it. A thin undershirt and a substantial knit change the available room, so testing over bare skin when you plan to layer can produce a false pass.
Button the shirt through the chest and smooth it once, but do not keep tugging it downward. Leave it untucked for the first round. Check that the shoulder seam ends near the edge of your shoulder rather than sitting well onto the upper arm, since a shoulder that is already too narrow can imitate sleeve restriction.
Now let both arms hang naturally. Notice whether the blue poplin sleeve presses into the biceps at rest. Bend the elbow, turn the palm upward, then relax it. Early pressure around the upper arm points toward insufficient sleeve width, particularly when the shirt body still hangs cleanly.
Place two fingers lightly near your natural underarm crease, then compare that point with the bottom of the shirt’s armhole. A visible gap does not prove the armhole is too low because bodies and patterns vary, but a large drop gives you something to watch during the movement test. There is no reliable universal finger-width rule.
Perform the arm-raise test
Raise one arm slowly out to the side. Stop first at about shoulder height rather than going straight overhead, because the earlier part of the movement shows where the garment begins to resist; once every shirt is pulled upward, the difference becomes harder to read.
Watch the hem on the raised-arm side. With a low armhole, the side seam starts traveling upward early, the hem may expose more of the waist, and the front placket can shift even though there is spare fabric around the biceps. Lower the arm. If the shirt remains bunched until you pull it back into position, count that as further evidence that the body and sleeve are moving as one unit.
Repeat the motion while looking at the upper sleeve. A sleeve-width problem feels like a band around the biceps, with horizontal or diagonal strain marks appearing before much of the hem moves. Flexing the arm slightly often intensifies the pressure. On a short sleeve, the opening may catch on the fullest part of the arm; on a long sleeve, the restriction can also tug the cuff upward.
Then raise both arms forward to shoulder height. This is a check for a separate issue rather than the main test. Strong pulling between the shoulder blades suggests the back or yoke is too narrow, while pressure across the front may come from the chest. Those faults can coexist with either a low armhole or a narrow sleeve, which is why a general feeling of tightness is not enough to diagnose the shirt.
Finish with one ordinary reach: touch the back of your head or reach toward a high fitting-room hook. The blue poplin shirt should not remain perfectly still, but it should let the arm move without hauling a large section of the torso upward or clamping the upper arm. Some hem lift is normal. Immediate lift from the waist is the warning.
Read what moved
If the hem rises sharply while the sleeve itself has visible ease, the armhole is probably too low. You may also see excess fabric hanging below the underarm when your arms are down. This combination is common in generously cut shirts that look relaxed but were made with deep armholes to accommodate a broad range of bodies.
If the torso stays comparatively quiet while the upper sleeve pinches, sleeve width is the more likely problem. Check the feeling against the fabric: nonstretch poplin will be direct, while a cotton shirt with elastane may disguise a narrow cut until the fabric has been under tension for several minutes.
When both areas move and strain, do not force a single diagnosis. The shirt may combine a deep armhole with a narrow sleeve, or the entire size may be too small through the shoulder and upper body. The arm-raise test is a way to isolate the first source of resistance, not a guarantee that the rest of the pattern fits.
Tucking the shirt adds another useful check after the initial test. A low armhole often pulls a tucked hem out of the waistband with one side reach, while a narrow sleeve can remain uncomfortable without disturbing the tuck much. Do not use a tight belt to hold the shirt down during testing, since that hides the movement rather than fixing it.
Decide whether alteration is worth it
A narrow sleeve may be alterable. Turn the sleeve inside out and inspect the long seam running from the underarm toward the cuff. Seam allowance is the fabric left inside a stitched seam, and a tailor may be able to release some of it to gain width. Many ready-to-wear shirts leave only a narrow finished margin, however, so the possible gain can be small.
Replacing or recutting a sleeve costs more because it requires suitable fabric and skilled pattern work. For an ordinary ready-to-wear poplin shirt, that is rarely the practical choice. Trying a size up may solve the sleeve pressure, though you should repeat the test to make sure the shoulder, collar, and body have not become too large.
A low armhole is a poor alteration candidate. Raising it generally requires adding matching fabric at the underarm and changing how the sleeve joins the body; taking in the side seams does not move the attachment point upward. A gusset, which is an inserted fabric panel that adds movement room, can help in specialized or valued garments, but it is more intervention than most new shirts justify.
The better response is another cut. Look for a shirt whose armhole sits closer to the underarm while still allowing enough room around the sleeve and chest. Do not assume that sizing up will help, since a larger size often drops the armhole farther and increases the same body-lifting effect.
Repeat the side raise in every candidate. On the blue cotton-poplin example, a successful alternative is not merely looser; its hem moves less because the sleeve joins the body nearer the natural pivot point of the arm. That is the fit improvement worth shopping for.
Questions people ask
How much should a shirt rise when I lift my arms?
Some movement is normal, especially when you reach overhead. At shoulder height, the hem should not shoot toward the ribs or pull a tucked shirt loose immediately. Compare shirts using the same movement and base layer; the better armhole usually reveals itself through less body lift, not through a perfectly stationary hem.
Does a higher armhole always feel tighter?
No. An armhole cut closer to the underarm can improve movement because the shirt’s attachment point follows the arm more directly. It still needs enough circumference and a compatible sleeve shape. If the edge presses into the underarm while your arms hang down, the opening may be too small or poorly shaped.
Can a tailor widen tight shirt sleeves?
Sometimes. A tailor can inspect the sleeve seam for usable seam allowance and may release a modest amount of fabric. If the finished seam has almost no spare material, meaningful widening requires rebuilding or replacing the sleeve, which is generally hard to justify for a standard ready-to-wear shirt.
